UNEP Information Center on Earth’s Environment and New Standing Exhibition Corner at Naha Airport
(04/08/2009)
Since March 30, a photo exhibit has been on display in the Welcome Hall on the second floor of Naha Airport in Naha, Okinawa Prefecture, called the UNEP (United Nations Environment Program) Information Center. It is being sponsored by UNEP, supervised by the Associates of the Earth (AOE) NPO, and organized by the NPO’s Naha branch (2 Kume, Naha-shi, Okinawa). This is the second time the event has been held at the airport since last year.
As part of UNEP’s activities, the exhibit is touring world airports with the purpose of raising environmental consciousness and getting people to know much more about the Earth’s present state. On display at the site are around fifty items including information on the environment and walls of photos. Along with the exhibit is the “UNEP Information Corner in Airport” that has been newly set up in the gallery on the north side of the airport’s third floor. It has a standing exhibit of sixteen items including valuable environmental information and photos in the possession of UNEP. Its purpose is to deliver this information and encourage more "environmental communication."
AOE’s Okinawa branch chairman Shinkawa said, “The standing exhibit is the world’s second after the one at London’s Heathrow Airport. It will be set up for six months, until September 30. We plan to change out some of the photos over a three-month period, and we’ll want to keep up the ones that are well-received... It would be good to get people to see what the present state of the Earth is, and to subsequently think about the environment in Okinawa, which is a big prefecture for tourism surrounded by the ocean.”
The UNEP Information Center is open when the airport is, with staff on-hand from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Admission is free, and it will run until April 12.
