Ganso Zushi

Ganso Sushi, a conveyor belt sushi restaurant chain operated by Sakai Sogo of Shibuya Ward, opened a location at Narita International Airport (NAA, Narita, Chiba Prefecture) in June that has done well and is especially popular among Australians.

The restaurant opened on July 18 on the fourth floor of the Main Building in Terminal 2. It has a floor area of about 53 square meters, and seats 26. Customers have been flocking to the restaurant to enjoy 136-yen plates of 60 types of sushi in a casual atmosphere. According to the head of the NAA location, “Product turnover is high and sales are good.”

Customers include Japanese as well as many Westerners. Australians particularly stand out when there are departures for their country, reportedly taking up to 80% of the seats.

Japanese cuisine and sushi are very popular in Australia, where there are also conveyor belt sushi restaurants. This system of serving seems to have already been established in Australia as, according to the restaurant, Australian customers deftly place pickled ginger on their plates, put tea powder and hot water in their teacups, and reach out for the plates of sushi. The chef was surprised to see customers so skilled that he wonders "whether they're more accustomed to it than Japanese." Menu items popular among Western travelers include battleship (gunkan) sushi, scallion-and-tuna rolls (negitoromaki), tuna sushi rolls (tekkamaki) and California rolls.

Business hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
