Participants are being sought for the Hagi Iwami Airport National Marathon scheduled to be held on October 18 with the airport, located in Masuda, Shimane Prefecture, to serve as the main venue.

In this city residents’ race, first held last year to promote the airport and local tourism, all courses include the 2,000-meter runway now in use at the airport. According to the office organizing the event, it is "the only one in Japan” where you can run on an actual airport runway. Gold medalist Yuko Arimori will be invited as a guest runner just like last year.

The courses are the Half Marathon (21.0975 km, an official course recognized by the Japan Association of Athletics Federation), a 10K, a 5K, a 3K, a 2K, and a family course for elementary students and other children to join along with their parents or guardians. A total of 3,000 people are being sought for the collective events.

Entries can be made online, or through the post after getting the application guidelines. According to the organizing office for the event, a lot of people have been talking about the “marathon where you can run at an airport” since applications were accepted starting in June, and the pace at which entries are coming in looks set to surpass last year's.

The application period closes on September 11.
