In June, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) released information including the transportation service results for Japanese airlines from January through March.

While according to the information the overall rates for delays and cancellations were about the same as the year prior, the total number of people transported was 19,752,141 and total revenues were just over 306 billion yen, each of which was roughly 10% below the same period in the previous year. The results are believed to reflect sluggish aviation demand due to the effects of the sudden economic downturn and the accompanying reduction of routes.

The most heavily flown routes according to number of travelers were Tokyo-Sapporo (2,197,171 people), Tokyo-Fukuoka (1,889,734 people) and Tokyo-Osaka (1,318,414 people). Overall usage of routes stood at 59.8%, with Fukushima-Naha making the most efficient use of capacity at 82.5%, followed by Naha-Kochi at 79.9%, and Osaka-Sapporo and Hiroshima-Naha both at 79.7%.
MLIT releases information on Japanese air transportation enterprises such as JAL, ANA, Air Do, Skymark, Skynet Asia and Star Flyer every quarter (as well as information on other smaller enterprises twice a year) to allow “aviation customers to freely and accurately select air transportation services.” Included among the data released is the status for setting discount fare rates and usage of fixed locations (boarding bridges) in airports.
