Rickshaws Guide Passengers to Gates - Limited-Time Service by ANA at Haneda Airport
(08/24/2009)
From August 16 to 22, All Nippon Airways (ANA) gave passengers rickshaw rides to their departure gates in Terminal 2 of Haneda Airport.
The service was part of the airline’s “ANA Summer Daisakusen Airport” project. ANA started the airport’s first-ever one week-only rickshaw service with the aim of “building excitement for people as they depart on their trips by having them experience some Japanese history and enjoy a lively, retro atmosphere.”
Rickshaw passengers were chosen randomly from travelers completing hand luggage inspections at security, and the vehicles were drawn by professionals who pull rickshaws for tourists in Tokyo’s Asakusa district. The sight of the 1.3 meter-wide rickshaws cruising slowly through the 400-meter walkway drew the attention and praise of airport visitors.
Hideo Yaguchi, head of ANA’s Tokyo Airport Branch Office, said, “The rickshaw is where public transportation started. ANA is always coming back to that starting point and greeting all [our customers] with ‘safety, warmth and cheerful happiness’.”
