WLAN on New Narita Express - Power Outlets at All Seats
(09/16/2009)
New Narita Express train
Starting October 1, carriages on the Narita Express (N’EX) railway providing airport access by connecting routes to Yokohama, Shinjuku, Omiya and Hachioji with Narita Airport in Narita, Chiba Prefecture offer broadband internet via wireless LAN and power connections.
The service is one of the upgrades on East Japan Railway’s (JR East) new E259 carriage for the Narita Express routes. Passengers will be able to connect to the internet from any seat via wireless LAN access points inside the carriages. Antennas on top of the carriages connect to UQ Communication Inc.’s WiMAX data transmission network. Users must either have a UQ WiMAX service contract with the free UQ Wi-Fi option, or have a contract to connect with Softbank Telecom Corp. BB Mobile Point providers.
All seats have been installed with 100 volt AC outlets to provide power for devices such as laptop computers so that users can use their regular AC power adapters.
By February 2010, the company aims to outfit the large LCD displays installed in each carriage with WiMAX capability to deliver large amounts of information via its high-speed data transmission network.
