Antiviral Measures against Swine Flu for Luggage Carts & Elevators at Kansai Int’l

Starting in September, Kansai International Airport (Izumisano, Osaka Prefecture) applied a special antiviral coating to places that the large, undetermined number of airport visitors touch with their hands―such as luggage cart handles and elevators buttons―as a measure against swine flue.

The main locations where the coating has been applied include the roughly 2,300 luggage carts’ handles, the 50 elevators’ buttons, the 500 toilet stall doors, the breastfeeding room, the first-aid room and information counters used in the terminal building. The process lasted from the 14th through the 19th.

The first day’s work applying coating to the luggage carts and elevator buttons occurred when the airport was open to the general public. The work was contracted to TAM Network staff, the technical department of Sunecoat Task, a company specializing in antiviral measures. The staff also provided a technical briefing.

According to the airport, this is the first antiviral project in Japan to be carried out on facilities on as large a scale as an airport passenger terminal.
