On October 1, Narita International Airport in Narita, Chiba Prefecture announced that it will collect a 500-yen Passenger Security Service Charge from each passenger starting November 16.

Until now, a portion of the Passenger Service Facility Charge collected from departing travelers has been set aside for security-related expenses. However, the airport announced that “since the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the U.S., there has been a sharp rise in security expenses, and in order to maintain the highest level of security at the airport,” it has decided to levy the additional fee. Passengers subject to the charge will be those departing the country and those making connections between international flights.

Additionally, the Passenger Service Facility Charge will be expanded to include those making connections between international flights. This charge is 1,020 yen for adults and 510 yen for children. The fee for those departing Japan will remain at 2,040 yen for adults and 1,020 yen for children.

The above two charges will be collected by including them in the price of airfare as a surcharge when passengers purchase their tickets.
