Hokkaido Character Spot at New Chitose Airport - Hokkaido Merchandise Store
(11/20/2009)
A new store that opened last month at New Chitose Airport in Chitose, Hokkaido called Hokkaido Character Spot has been garnering attention from airport visitors.
The shop in the third-floor Sky Gallery in the airport's terminal specializes in character goods from Hokkaido TV and radio stations and sports teams from the prefecture. Roughly 360 kinds of merchandise are arranged on a 15-meter sales floor in the gallery passage.
According to Hokkaido Airport Terminal Co., Ltd., which runs the store, the concept for the mix of merchandise was born from an idea to show people at the airport the fun and originality of Hokkaido. Since opening, some of the best-selling items have been goods commemorating the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters pro baseball team’s Pacific League championship this year. In addition to the 2,500-yen Pacific League Champions caps that display three championship years (2006, 2007 and 2009), merchandise for the team’s mascot, B.B., are also popular. Other attractive merchandise includes other sports goods for Hokkaido's soccer team, Consadole Sapporo, and its basketball team, Rera Kamuy, as well as characters and DVDs from original programming on local television.
A statement from the store commented, “We want to gather locally characters and actively attract airport visitors to Hokkaido and local businesses and organizations.”
