On December 1, the rules for handling carry-on luggage brought onto aircraft flying domestic routes in Japan have been consolidated by all airline companies operating regular commercial flights in Japan, and the rules have been put in place at all airports and security checkpoints.

Until this change, each airline had different operating procedures with regards to standards and handling rules for carry-on luggage brought on board, but they have been standardized by all companies in the Scheduled Airlines Association of Japan based in Minato Ward, Tokyo that was formed by the airlines.

Size limitations stipulated for luggage that passengers may carry onto flights under the consolidated standards are as follows: total height, width and depth of 115 cm (55 x 40 x 25) on passenger flights with 100 or more seats; total height, width and depth of 100 cm (45 x 35 x 20) on passenger flights with less than 100 seats. All passengers passing through security checkpoints are being checked according to these rules. Gauges for confirming luggage size have been provided.
