Preparations Underway for Sky Day Events at 75 Japanese Airports - Open Facilities, Aviation Workshops and Much More
(08/19/2010)
Airports and other aviation facilities across Japan will be holding all kinds of events for Sky Day on September 20 and for Sky Week from September 20 to 30.
Sky Day and Sky Week were founded by the Ministry of Transport (now the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, or MLIT) in 1992 with the aim of increasing the public’s understanding about aviation. Each year a variety of events including tours and aviation workshops are held at regional airports, heliports, traffic control bureaus, radar facilities and elsewhere. According to Sky Day Net, the official homepage set up by the Sky Day and Sky Week executive committee, 75 airports and other aviation facilities in Japan are currently (as of July 26) organizing various projects.
The variety of events includes restricted areas open to the public, control tower tours, demonstration flights and aircraft rides. Some of the more unique ones are the soraben (meaning “sky bento,” a bento being a Japanese-style portable boxed meal) factory tour at New Chitose Airport and the Aeronautical Satellite Lecture at the Hitachi-Ota Aeronautical Satellite Center, as well as an air show at Fukui Airport, which is not served by regular commercial flights. In conjunction with the Sky Day and Sky Week festivities, fifteen Air Self-Defense Force bases across Japan are also putting on air shows with fighter jets and other aircraft (some of which have already been held).
Some of the events will be held on dates other than Sky Day and Sky Week and may require advance reservations to attend. Event details can be checked at Sky Day Net and each airport’s official website.
