On New Year's Day 2011, Japan Airlines Co., Ltd. (JAL) will fly special flights to enjoy "Hatsuhinode" and "Hatsufuji" on planes flying from Narita and Haneda Airports. “Hatsuhinode” is the Japanese word for the first sunrise of the year and "Hatsufuji" means the first sight of Mt. Fuji in the light of the New Year's Day sunrise.

JAL Tours Co., Ltd., which sells domestic travel plans for the carrier, is planning charter flights for New Year's Day. A 210-seat Boeing 767-300 used on international routes will depart from Narita Airport for the first flight, taking off at 6:00 a.m. Passengers will see the first sunrise over Choshi Bay, circle around Mt. Fuji's north side and then return to Narita at around 8:00 a.m. A 155-seat Boeing 737-800 will depart from Haneda Airport at 6:00 a.m. Passengers will enjoy the first sunrise over the north side of Mt. Fuji, then fly near the Izu Peninsula and Oshima before returning to Haneda at 8:00 a.m. Passengers will be given commemorative flight certificates in addition to offerings of osechi meals (traditional Japanese New Year's cuisine), red and white manju (steamed buns filled with bean paste) and more.

Fare for a window seat and adjacent (non-window) seat on the Narita flight totals 48,000 yen (fare for two economy class seats) and 11,000 yen for aisle seats (fare for one economy class seat). An additional charge applies for first-class seating. Fare for a window seat and adjacent (non-window) seat on the Haneda flight totals 55,000 yen (fare for two economy class seats) and 14,000 yen for aisle seats (fare for one economy class seat).

JAL Tours began selling the seats for the two flights as tour packages on November 17 and 18. Within a few hours they were nearly sold out. According to an industry expert the "Hatsuhinode Flights" are rare plans found only in Japan.
