The Super Shuttle, a low cost shuttle bus (or "limousine bus" as it is often called in Japan) has been connecting Narita International Airport in Narita, Chiba Prefecture with the Higashi-Ueno and Asakusa districts in Tokyo for only JPY 1,000. The buses are operated by Koto Ward, Tokyo-based Cab Station Co., Ltd.

The company also has tour bus and tour taxi businesses. Daisuke Kawahara, a member of the company's sales promotion department, said, "Although the main connections to Ueno and Asakusa from Narita Airport are rail, there are many tourists who find it inconvenient because changing trains on the way is a hassle and sometimes you can't find a seat. That's why we started this business, which we're running with the support of hotel and ryokan assocations in Ueno and Asakusa, among others."

Mr. Kawahara added, "Our main target is foreign tourists and Japanese travelers." The company chose Ueno and Asakusa because "they are very popular among foreign travelers and there is high demand there for transport."

The company has been able to offer low fares by "cutting personnel expenses such as tour guides and reception as well as cutting transport costs by avoiding routes on the Metropolitan Expressway. And although fares are low, passengers can get a comfortable ride because we use new buses. The buses are also incredibly safe because we have carefully compiled a safety manual." Customers can contact the company by phone in four languages: Japanese, English, Chinese and Korean.

Seating is limited to 45 passengers. Buses make four one-way runs a day.
