In November, Ohta Ward, Tokyo-based Skymark Airlines Inc. will start rolling out flights to New Chitose, Asahikawa, Fukuoka and Naha from Narita International Airport, initially offering "Bargain Fares" of JPY 980 on one-way trips for a limited number of seats.

The airline's president, Shinichi Nishikubo, made the announcement at a business plan information session held in Tokyo on April 12. Skymark plans to add routes connecting Narita with Hakodate, Izumo, Takamatsu, Tokushima and Ishigaki, with regular fares costing roughly JPY 2,000 less than flights in and out of Haneda. In addition to the Bargain Fares, the company is also actively expanding its air services as a low-cost carrier (LCC) by setting discounted one-way fares as low as JPY 3,800. Skymark is looking to attract new customers by following the example of Western LCCs, which provide convenient and low-priced air services at outlying airports.

Skymark has stated that it hopes to fly on long-haul international routes in 2014 and has already decided to use the Airbus A380. Before that happens, the company plans to expand its domestic network at Narita and elsewhere in Japan, which will help the airline develop its international routes in three years' time.
