On November 15, Narita International Airport in Narita, Chiba Prefecture released a free-to-download photo album app presenting the wonders of Japan.

The airport collaborated with U.S.-based Fotonauts Inc. to produce the Japanese version of the Fotopedia photo album app. Fotopedia, a popular app available in seven languages that allows users to view gorgeous photos of global tourist destinations on their mobile devices, is available in more than 120 countries and has been downloaded more than 5 million times. Narita Airport, which serves as a gateway to Japan, lent Fotonauts its full cooperation to produce the Japanese version of the app as a tool to show people the wonders of Japan and encourage them to travel to and develop an interest in the country.

The name of the app is Fotopedia Japan and is compatible with iOS 4.0 or later on the iPad and iPhone. The content contains over 1,300 images or Japanese scenery, architecture and culture taken by professional photographers. It synchs with Wikipedia to provide tourist destination information and also gives the viewer their locations. Users can also synch with social media. The app is available in Japanese, English, French, German, Spanish, Chinese and Korean. Downloads are free until mid-May 2012.

"The number of travelers to Japan dropped after the Great East Japan Earthquake*, so we hope to encourage them to come again with this app by getting them to rediscover their desire to travel to Japan and our country's beauty and culture," said a Narita Airport spokesperson.

* Previously referred to by Airport News Japan as the "Tohoku Pacific Earthquake," an official translation many Japanese government agencies used immediately after the disaster occurred. The new term has recently become the established standard translation of the disaster.
