On January 13, Japan Air Lines Co., Ltd. (JAL) commissioned the Hellosmile JET, an aircraft sporting a special livery featuring Hello Kitty to raise awareness about cervical cancer prevention. The jet is flying on domestic routes.

The livery is part of the Hellosmile project to promote accurate understanding of cervical cancer and its prevention. In addition to JAL, participating companies include Tokyo FM Broadcasting Co., Ltd. and Sanrio Co., Ltd. The project logo and a profile image of Hello Kitty appear on the rear section of the Boeing 777-300's fuselage. According to JAL, designs with Hello Kitty rarely use the character's profile.

On the same day, the aircraft departed from Haneda Airport on its maiden flight with the new livery as flight JAL517 bound for Sapporo. A life-size Hello Kitty was at the departure gate to promote the project initiative among boarding passengers. From its base in Haneda, the aircraft with the special livery will eventually fly on routes to all major airports across Japan by the end of the year.

According to JAL, this is the first aircraft with special livery painted for the purpose of raising awareness about cervical cancer prevention.
