Ramen Booths at Singapore's Changi Int'l Airport
(01/27/2012)
On December 22, Komars Holdings Pte Ltd, a company that runs Japanese restaurants in Singapore, opened Ramen Champion, a grouping of ramen booths in a public area of Terminal 3 at Changi International Airport in Singapore. The facility follows the success of another Ramen Champion that opened in July in the Iluma shopping center located in Singapore's Bugis district.
Ramen Champion has seating for around 60 diners. Four restaurants have opened booths there: Gantetsu (from Hokkaido), Hakata Ikkosha (Fukuoka), Gensuke (Fukuoka) and Chikara (Tokyo). These are the first restaurants for Gensuke and Chikara to open outside of Japan.
The two Ramen Champion facilities are both running the 18-month-long Ultimate Ramen Champion 2011 Singapore competition. The overall winner will be decided according to sales, Facebook feedback and the results of voting at the restaurants. Although "2011" appears in the name of the competition, it will run until December of this year. With the opening of the airport facility, Gensuke and Chikara have become new entries in the competition.
"Ramen is a meal you can get without having to wait for it to be prepared, so it's perfect if you're short on time before boarding a flight," says Mr. Matsudaira, Komars Holdings' marketing manager. "We hope customers will enjoy standing up at the counter for some ramen." Mr. Chin, Komars Holding's senior marketing executive, added, "Singaporeans like thin noodles with a creamy flavor. The most popular booth at our first facility in the city is Hakata Ikkosha, but I'm looking forward to seeing who the winner is at the airport."
