On January 30, long-haul international low-cost carrier (LCC) AirAsia X, part of the AirAsia Group, announced that it will increase the number of weekly flights on its Haneda-Kuala Lumpur route to seven.

As part of the airline's route network revamp, weekly flights will increase from the present three to six starting on March 23, then expand to daily service starting June 22. AirAsia X's plans name Japan as a "core market" after Australia, China, Taiwan and South Korea. The carrier already operates four weekly flights to Kansai International Airport and has said that it is planning service to other cities.

According to AirAsia X, more than 100,000 people have flown on the Haneda-Kuala Lumpur route since December 2010, when service first commenced. Ridership has averaged at 75%. Although demand dropped from March through June of last year due to the Great East Japan Earthquake, ridership has recovered and sustained a rate of 80% both to and from Haneda.
