On November 17, Iwate Hanamaki Airport (Hanamaki, Iwate Prefecture) revealed its mascot for the new passenger terminal currently under construction.

The character is to draw public attention to the new terminal when it opens in April next year. The design by Yuzo Kashiwagi, from the city of Morioka, was chosen by an airport selection committee from among seventy-seven submissions sent in from around the country.

Construction started on the new passenger terminal in February of this year, which will stand at three stories high and encompass a total floor space of over 7,300 square meters, over 1,000 square meters larger than the present passenger terminal. Domestic and international flights will be in completely separate areas, and the lobby will be expanded. In addition, universal designs will be introduced, such as for information signs, to improve overall convenience. Completion is scheduled for January next year.

The adopted character design will be used for a wide range of advertising, but details such as the character name and campaign development are still being ironed out, and a series of decisions will be made before the terminal’s opening.
