On July 1, Peach (IATA code: MM; operated by Izumisano, Osaka Prefecture-based Peach Aviation Limited) opened its second international route with regular commercial service, connecting Kansai International Airport with Hong Kong.
Peach employees were at the Kansai Airport departure gate to celebrate the 9:10 p.m. maiden flight and send off 153 passengers. The return flight departing Hong Kong at 12:50 a.m. came back with 157 travelers. Roundtrip, the first flight filled over 85% of seats.
Peach Aviation CEO Shinichi Inoue attended a commemorative ceremony at Hong Kong International Airport, where he greeted passengers and Peach employees. Inoue said, "We created Peach after studying the global LCC business for two years, based in Hong Kong. Opening our Hong Kong route is so incredibly emotional for me. I hope Peach becomes an LCC that the people of Hong Kong will love."
Initially, Peach's fares on the Hong Kong route are selling at a discount of JPY 8,880 (HK$888). In China, eight is considered an auspicious number. One Hong Konger woman in her 20s who flew to Kansai International for sightseeing said, "(Peach) has cheaper fares than other airlines and they're more convenient. And the late-night departures let you make efficient use of your schedule, so I think Hong Kongers may like it." According to a Peach spokesperson, around 90% of travelers on the first departure from Hong Kong were from there and bookings from Hong Kong are brisk.
On September 30, Peach plans to start its third international route―following those connecting Kansai with Seoul and Hong Kong―between Kansai and Taoyuan International Airport in Taipei.
