Google Inc. announced on February 14 that its new search feature, Google Now, also handles flight information from Japan Airlines Co., Ltd. (JAL) and All Nippon Airways, Co., Ltd. (ANA).

The service was launched in May of last year. Using the Google search app on devices running the Android operating system, Google Now allows users to check schedules and destinations on Google Calendar. It also matches email data with itinerary departure times, detailed information on mass transit, popular nearby spots for amateur photography and more. Google Now automatically displays information including flight status, destination arrival time, destination weather, local sightseeing, along with exchange rates and translations for international travel. A Google project manager called the app "a feature that gives the user the information they need, when they need it."

The latest update to the Google Now app provides the flight information feature in Japan. The app automatically displays information on flight status and transportation to the airport according to booking confirmations and boarding instructions received through Gmail. Google Now currently only handles international and domestic flights by JAL and domestic flights by ANA.

Operating systems compatible with the service are Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) or better. Google Now is an opt-in service that must be enabled to activate it on a device. Google plans to continue adding more flights for the service to cover.
