Concept shops dedicated to fictional J-pop idol Hatsune Miku opened for a limited time at two locations inside Haneda Airport in Ohta Ward, Tokyo on January 17, 2014.

The stores are part of an event revolving around the virtual singer, a popular Vocaloid ("vocal" + "android"; also the name of the singing synthesizing technology that creates the singer's voice) among netizens. Sony Music Communications Inc. and Haneda Airport Enterprise Co., Ltd., the event's organizers, opened the concept shops, both called Hatsune Miku Wing Shop, in Terminal 1 and the International Terminal.

Inside each store, a new type of character merchandise shop, is a varied collection of Hatsune Miku products. Among them are limited-production travel items and original goods that allow travelers to experience the Hatsune Miku vision on a deeper level.

Although the Hatsune Miku persona exists only online, her exploits have had ramifications in the real world, resulting in collaborations with commercial complexes and restaurants, a joint performance with an orchestra, a Hatsune Miku-themed art exhibition at a museum and many more news-generating projects in Japan and abroad. A store publicist said, "We're going to show the world Japan's unique subculture through our partnership between Hatsune Miku, a rising star in Japan and around the world, and Haneda Airport, the gateway to Japan."

Each store's business hours will be the same as the rest of each terminal building floor and will remain in place until March 31, 2014.
