New Chitose Airport in Chitose, Hokkaido Prefecture will host the New Chitose Airport International Animation Festival from October 31st to November 3rd.

The main venue is the Jaga Pokkuru Theater, a permanent movie theater with three screens and a total of 377 seats on the fourth floor of the airport's terminal. The theater will screen a wide range of cartoons from Japan and around the world at this full-on festival of animation. The terminal holds an event hall, meeting rooms, overnight accommodations, baths and more. By making dynamic use of the airport's diverse facilities frequented by many an air traveler, the steering committee hopes to make the event into "an airport film festival unprecedented anywhere in the world by making full use of all the airport terminal building's offerings."

The main part of the festival is the Animated Short Film Competition, which is now accepting online submissions from the general public. Submissions must be animations of no more than 30 minutes in length and completed on April 1st, 2012 or later. The panel of judges comprising animation, film and literary critics includes Chris Robinson, the artistic director of the Ottawa International Animation Festival. Prizes will include a Grand Prix, New Filmmaker's Award and Japan Grand Prix. There will also be an award selected via audience member votes.
