Japan Airlines (JAL) began operating a new route between Kansai International Airport and Gimpo Airport in Seoul on January 10.

The carrier had operated three daily roundtrip flights between Kansai and Seoul’s Incheon International Airport, but now one of them will fly to Gimpo to increase convenience by offering faster access to downtown Seoul. Flight JL8965 flies from Kansai (1:00 p.m.) to Gimpo (2:55 p.m.), and JL8966 from Gimpo (4:00 p.m. to Kansai (5:40 p.m.). The Boeing 767 used on the route has 30 business class and 204 economy class seats.

According to JAL’s public relations department, the boarding rate on the new flight has been “good” since it began operating, and the airline will consider its sales strategy while keeping an eye on passenger use and market trends.

The Kansai-Gimpo route came about as a result of an agreement reached at bilateral aviation talks between Japan and South Korea in August of last year. The agreement allows for four daily flights (two roundtrip) by airlines from each country starting from the winter schedule, and two Korean carriers have already starting flying the route since December. The only regular flights connecting other Japanese airports to Gimpo are sixteen daily charter flights (eight roundtrip) from Tokyo International (Haneda) operated by four airlines from Japan and Korea.
