An authentic sand sculpture event will be held at Kagoshima Airport in Kirishima, Kagoshima Prefecture on March 20.

The city of Minami Satsuma’s ’09 Sand & Flower Festa to be held in May is approaching, and there will be actual sand sculptures made in the airport terminal, where the process of creating finely detailed sand art will be shown to the public. This airport event was first held last year.

The aims of the Sand & Flower Festa is for the development of local art and industry by creating a “sand culture,” and to foster recognition of the natural environment by using the sand at Fukiage Beach, which has one of the Three Great Sand Dunes of Japan. The festival will feature a lineup of around eighty sand sculptures both large and small created by professional sculptors invited from around the world, volunteer groups and local elementary and junior high school students, along with events for people to make their own sculptures. This festival of “dreams in the starry sky” will run from May 2 through 6, with purchase of a ticket required for entry.

Sand sculptures will be made in the airport terminal from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the area next to the foot bath. The works can be viewed for free, and finished works will be on display until May 6.
