The Hagi Iwami Airport Marathon sponsored by Hagi Iwami Airport in Masuda, Shimane Prefecture will be held on October 16.

The marathon, which will be put on for the fourth time, is a citizen's running race first held in 2008 to promote the airport and local tourism. The marathon will start on the apron and all events will include round-trip race courses on the airport's 2,000-meter runway, which is still in service. The Half Marathon (21.0975 km) is an official course recognized by the Japan Association of Athletics Federation. According to the marathon organizing office, there are other "airport marathons" with races around runways, but Hagi Iwami's is the "only one in Japan" that allows participants to run on an actual runway. Past marathons have drawn runners and aviation enthusiasts from across Japan to join and they have had over 2,000 participants.

The events are the Half Marathon, 10k, 5k, 3k and 2k along with a non-competitive race for wheelchair racers and children up to elementary age to participate with their parents or guardians.

A total of 3,000 contestants can join in this year's events. Entries are now being accepted online and through the post. The deadline is August 31.
